Was reading some Damasio, in which he notes his sense that one key omission in human AI models is “feeling.” And he means this not merely as something that can be measured quantitatively in neuroscience, his expertise, but as indexed by “introspection,” a long -demeaned “method” in socialcultural science, both by those sciences and its physical science siblings. A feeler’s “report” from inside (the delicious paradox here is that if this “coin” of expression is language/narrative, it is also, inevitably, of/from the outside). I appreciate the opportunity to write that here.
This reminds of the words of Suzuki. He said when the monks at the monastery received a letter from home that the connection brought them so much joy. I feel that joy when I think of my Dad holding my hand. Whatever we call those moments, those letters from home are all around us. See you all tonight.
